West Gonja Assembly Gifts PwDs 200 Sheep

The West Gonja District Assembly has donated 200 sheep to some 50 people living with disabilities in the area.

Speaking at a short ceremony at Damongo, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Saeed Jibril said three per cent of the district assembly’s common fund is earmarked to support initiatives by the physically challenged in the district.

He said people with disabilities have a fund management committee that is chaired by the presiding member of the assembly with representatives of the District Social Welfare Officer and the community of people living with disabilities.

The DCE said it was the committee that recommended the procurement of the 200 sheep.

He said it was the committee that recommended the 50 beneficiaries comprising 32 males and 18 females from some selected communities including Larabanga, Damongo, Murugu, Broto, Sor, Dakpalakura and Busunu.

Mr Jibril noted that in 2017, the disability management committee supported 51 people living with a disability with 30 deep freezers, 10 sewing machines, three poly tanks, three popcorn machines and two beekeeping machines.

He urged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the animals since a team including veterinary officers will be monitoring how the sheep were doing.

Mr Jibril said the sheep are not meant to be sold or consumed by the beneficiaries, but to keep them for economic purposes.

The chairman of the committee for people living with disabilities, who doubles as the presiding member for the West Gonja District Assembly, Mr Dramani Katribi, also, in a speech, said it is the wish of every government to help people with disabilities.

The President of the PwDs, Mr Joshua Takora Dramani praised the West Gonja District Assembly for the concern the assembly has for them and urged people with disabilities who are not registered with the association in the district to do well to do so since that will help the assembly to know how many of them there are in that part of the country.
