The University of Ghana has graduated its first batch of MSc Speech and Language Therapy students.
This was at the University’s 2019 November graduation ceremony.
A total of 12 students, comprising of 11 females and a male graduated successfully, receiving an MSc certificate in Speech and Language Therapy.
They become the first group of locally trained Speech and Language Therapists in Ghana
The University of Ghana is the only institution in Ghana, and one of the six in Africa, offering a Masters Degree in the programme.
This major milestone by the university comes to augment the few trained professionals in the country.
The University of Ghana commenced Speech and Language therapy training in August 2016 in the Department of Audiology and Language Therapy under the School of Biomedical and Allied Health.
Speech and Language Therapists are allied health professionals who provide treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing related to autism, cleft lip and palate deformities and stammering.
They also cater for patients recovering from stroke and major head and neck cancer surgeries, for which rehabilitation for speech, voice, and swallowing will be required. The work of SLTs involves working with parents, carers and other professionals such as teachers, nurses, occupational therapists and doctors to provide essential services to children and adults with communication difficulties.
