TMA Distributes Items To Persons With Disability

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has commenced the distribution of equipment, items and cash payments to Persons with Disability (PWDs) in the Metropolis to enhance their livelihoods.

The items included; refrigerator deep freezers, brand new industrial sewing machines, electronic appliances, tricycles for physically challenged, Information Technology Sets, barbering kits, medical supplies, provisions for shop keepers, plastics bowls.

In all, 63 beneficiaries of the 119,785 Ghana cedi package were selected subject to a vetting process.

Some beneficiaries received cash to foot their medical bills, school fees, and funds to reinvest in their collapsing businesses whiles others were retooled and given money to help them venture into commercially viable activities intended to improve their economic circumstances.

Procured by the Assembly out of the three per cent allocation to PWDs from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and based on requests after needs assessment was conducted, the items would enhance their business activities.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to disburse the items on the Assembly premises, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of TMA, Mr Felix Mensah Anang-La, said out of the total amount, ?7,778.00 went into medical support, ?4,178.00 for educational support and ?107,500 for business support respectively.

“In May this year, a total of ?51,409.00 was disbursed to support various businesses, medical and educational bills of 51 persons with disabilities” he added.

He stated that some 10 persons had requested container grocery shops and these shops were currently being worked on and would be stocked and handed over to the beneficiaries on schedule.

These interventions, he noted, were meant to make PWDs self-sufficient and to empower them to contribute their quota to societal and national development.

He said the president’s vision of empowering all Ghanaians irrespective of their circumstances in life, necessitated the introduction of several pro-poor initiatives aimed at reaching out to everyone in society.

The MCE admonished the beneficiaries to put the items to good use so they could derive the full benefits thereof.

Mr Peter Agbogedenu, President, Physically Disabled Association, who expressed elation at the gesture, called on the Assembly, to at all times, prioritize the needs of PWDs as most of them had the potential in contributing to the development agenda of the Metropolis.
