Federation Of Disability Organizations Appeals For Government Aid

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) has called on government, groups and individuals to come to their aid in order to ease their burdens.

The Leader of the organisation, Mr. Samuel Sarpong Boateng made the call on Friday, December 11, 2020 while speaking at the launch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) in Koforidua.

Mr. Boateng appealed for funds to support the association to purchase walking aids for members, without which he said movement is very unbearable for some members in their day to day activities.

He also lamented the unwillingness of drivers to board persons with disabilities and appealed for a bus to ease movement of members of the federation.

“Members are not able to attend meetings and other functions organized by the association or attend social functions because all their movements depend on dropping due to the fact that many drivers do not want to stop and pick a disabled person on the street. Majority of us are not working so we are unable to pay for lofty dropping charges. We therefore need a bus that can convey our members to and from any gathering”, he said.

Office
Mr. Boateng also pleaded for the establishment of an office complex to enable it better manage the activities and records of membership.

He lauded the government for the support it has given to GFD in the New Juaben Municipality through the Common Fund.

“The Common Fund is helping the group a lot but we still need more help from you. If the government can provide housing for people with disability, it will go a long way to help us because many landlords do not want to rent their houses to us,” he said.

Support
The Municipal Coordinator of New Juaben North, Alhaj Ibrahim Tijani who represented the Municipal Chief Executive, Ms Comfort Asante as the Special Guest of Honour, said that previous pleas made by some members of GFD were thoroughly considered with the necessary assistance offered. He assured that the municipal directorate would fulfill promises made to them.

He added that an office would be assigned for the GFD at the assembly’s new office complex to address their grievances.
