2019 Mandela Washington Fellow Binta, Champions Well-Being Of Deaf Women

Binta Badjie

Binta Badjie is an inspiring disability rights activist with a good track record of leadership and community engagement.

She bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and Labor Management from the American International University in The Gambia.  Binta identifies herself as a deaf woman.

She also serves as Secretary General of the Gambian Deaf Women’s Society, which she co-founded.  The young leader wants to promote employment opportunity and socio-economic advancement for deaf women in The Gambia.  With the Society, she established a restaurant – Tulkuya – that employs 10 deaf women.

Binta has experience liaising with employers in her community to advocate for deaf women.  Between her studies in labor and her community activity, she has charted a path for success and already is showing herself to be a leader in promoting opportunities for deaf women in The Gambia.

Binta’s work is intended to garner confidence and empower deaf women to lead sustainable lives while contributing to the social wellbeing of their communities.  She also lectures at the St. John’s School for Deaf and organizes student mentorship camps across the country.
